| Catatan | Economic globalization and trade liberalization have profoundly shaped contemporary patterns of international division of labor, gradually forming a division system centered on global value chains (GVCs). This system achieves optimal efficiency and minimized costs by decomposing production processes and distributing them across different countries and regions, becoming the most prominent feature of global economic and trade exchanges in recent decades. However, in recent years, amid profound and complex adjustments in the international landscape, intensified strategic competition among major powers, and the severe impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, this system has faced multiple pressures and is undergoing significant adjustments and structural reshaping. Against this backdrop, China’s manufacturing sector, known as the “world’s factory” has entered a critical phase of transformation while confronting dual challenges from both domestic and international fronts. On the one hand, the domestic industrial structure still suffers from imbalances, with limited value-added in certain sectors and bottlenecks in key technological areas. On the other hand, the previous development model was reliant on low cost factors and processing trade risks, locking industries into low-end segments of GVCs. To break through these constraints and elevate its position in the international division of labor, China urgently needs to embrace innovation as a guiding principle, actively adjust its factor structure, shift from demographic dividends to talent and technological dividends, and rebuild dynamic competitive advantages to drive manufacturing toward high-quality development. Notably, the rapid rise of digital technologies and their deep integration with the industrial sectors provide new pathways and directions for upgrading China’s manufacturing industry. This trend not only reshapes the domestic manufacturing ecosystem but also drives the evolution of GVCs toward “digital global value chains” profoundly altering embedded cost structures, production methods, and the global distribution of gains. Facing the approaching digital era, if China can seize opportunities and proactively adapt, it will be well-positioned to occupy a more advantageous place in the new round of global industrial transformation. |
