(WhatsApp) for their research activities.
The results of field observation can be analyzed by one of the main
theories suitable for the interpretive approach, namely The Structuration
Theory of Anthony Giddens (1976), and the application of this theory,
namely Adaptive Structuration Theory developed by Poole and DeSanctis
(1990). The research using this structural analysis will focus on the activities
of certain routine activities that are part of the activities of UI researchers.
Giddens perspective is the basis of adaptive theory. The Structure itself is
a process of system formation and reproduction by members of the system
by applying rules and utilizing resources. Poole and DeSanctis apply this
theory to understand how the structure of information technology interacts
with rules and resources in a social entity. Both researchers say that what a
social group produces is not a direct result of the technological effect, but
rather a reflection of how the group adopted the technology structure to the
context of the use of the technology (or termed appropriation). Specifically,
the two researchers described the following technological structures:
In our study, we distinguish two aspects of the technological structure,
i.e the spirit (spirit) of technology in the form of the objectives and
behavioral behaviors that the technology wants to be shaped by [...]
and the special features embedded in the technology system. Within
the social structure, there is also a rule or resource rule, in addition to
the spirit of the group that binds rules and resources as a unity.
Gidden theory and its adaptation by Poole and DeSanctis is an
attempt to understand the meaning of virtual telematics technology space
(WhatsApp) by UI researchers. This theory underlines the existence of a
dialectic between technology and changes within an organization.
IV. DATA AND ANALYSIS
A. The Use of Information Technology for Research Activities
A computer or laptop has been provided for access and communication
to all informants either by the Study Program or by the University in the
working spaces. CS-1 says that “Over 50% of my time, I use it for browsing,
usually on the online databases subscribed by UI Library, website and
to open chats and e-mail”. CS-1 is a Lecturer who won research grants
from both the University and the Faculty. She uses WhatsApp since it was
launched in 2009. In 2009 when she learned that WhatsApp also known
as “WA” can be used, she used WhatsApp to communicate with friends,
colleagues and even relatives by making WhatsApp Group (WAG).
Therefore, nowadays, she has many WAGs on his gadget. He stated “that
time I used data package, but now I used wifi facilities at home and utilize
