Kajian Dalam Bidang Ilmu Perpustakaan dan Informasi: Filosofi, Teori, dan Praktik
condition of most libraries in Indonesia.
Second, he aims to break down establishment and pave a way for new
alternatives and possibilities allowing changes in text understanding. One
who has uncritically accepted what is passed down by their predecessors
without any shred of intention to develop a different path will definitely be
faced with stagnation and even stoppage in the way they think. Contrarily,
one who is accustomed and trained to opt for variation and differing paths
will have richer perspectives and be constantly open to opportunities to
explore new things. A librarian who feels that nothing can be done to
promote the community’s interest in and fondness for reading other than
offering a constantly updated collection will never see the opportunities
of reading for pleasure. It will never cross their mind that reading interest
may be boosted through lifestyle-based approaches if they believe that
collection recency is the only key to attracting visitors to libraries.
Third, he aims to encourage critical thinking development by liquefying
frozen ideologies contained in texts for us to learn from experiences we
unknowingly gained, which in fact are products of ideological bias. It will
be hard for an uncritical individual to reveal that behind the texts they
consume is hidden interest and bias toward dominant powers. A librarian
who understands that the sole purpose of reading is to improve knowledge
will reject the presence of popular novels which are deemed to pose a
threat for the importance and purpose of reading. Not a few of librarians
think in a way similar to teachers do, seeing reading as part of academic or
learning activities. In fact, to promote the fondness for reading, importance
should be placed not on how it is considered as part of learning processes,
but on how reading activities are carried out as part of enjoyable leisure
activities, which later sets a foundation for the development of critical
literacy development.
And fourth, he aims to bring attention to marginalized meanings,
change text meaning, and raise our awareness that it is not impossible to
bring forth alternative meanings to long established texts (Haryatmoko,
2016). In other words, a text does not always come with a single meaning
and that there is a possibility for new meanings distinct to the earlier one
to be presented. A librarian who believes that libraries are the only reading
providers for users and does not think that libraries now are entering a new
era marked with the emergence of digital information providers such as
popular site Google and social media will be left behind in development.
Twenty to thirty years past, when social media, information technologies,
and the Internet were not as advanced as they are today, it was justifiable
for libraries to rely on their wealth of collection to invite readers. This is no
longer the case now, however, when the Internet is present to offer infinite
