enough, many TBM actors were invited by librarians (and library schools)
as an expert and give speech.
Competition between libraries and librarians, and the Internet to
attract users and the public, raises questions from librarians about the
future of their profession, their role, and the role of the library where they
work. Questions that also arose in those who are initially very interested
in becoming librarians who, after hearing and seeing by themselves the
conditions of librarians and libraries, might undo their interests and change.
The lack of interest is also reinforced by the presence of new jobs in the
field of data and information that they already have the ability to fulfill and
might be accepted if they apply for the job. If this condition is left without a
solution, it is not impossible that the library is not only abandoned by users
and the community, even by the librarians themselves.
From observation, chat, discussion and reading references, it can be
stated that the library as a management institution, information center and
disseminator of knowledge, is still very much needed. The presence of
the Internet with billions of data provided cannot be juxtaposed with the
quality of the knowledge resources in the library. A manager from OCLC
(Ohio College Library Center, developed into the Online Computer Library
Center) said that the Internet is like a vacuum cleaner that only «sucks» and
collects data without ever selecting or judging the data it stores, and never
selecting people who took the data. The internet cannot be held responsible
if it is known that the data is false or wrong. In contrast to the Internet, all
data in the form of collections of library are the result of strict selection.
There is no collection that is not the result of librarian selection. Librarians
always pay attention to whether the user chooses library materials that
suit their needs, even conformity with his age. Librarians can also be held
responsible if there is a wrong collection in the library. Librarians with
expertise and skills in managing knowledge and serving them cannot be
rivaled by TBM actors who on average are not people with the competence
to manage knowledge, but the people who just interested and concerned in
the world of reading and serving the community.
The idea of the importance of the role of librarians and libraries in
educating the nation, fostering the reading habit and information literacy,
led to the idea of finding a solution that would restore the library as a center
of knowledge, and restore librarians> trust as a profession that guaranteed
reading, literacy and available knowledge. enrich the life of a nation. This
paper aims to describe the idea of the new role of librarians and libraries
and to win it when they have to compete with the presence of information
and communication technology.
