used such as from Ellis (1993), followed by Leckie, Pettigrew & Sylvain
(1996), Kuhlthau (1993), McKenzie (2003), and Davis (1989). Those
models used in theses discuss below.
Ellis (1993)
The findings showed Ellis’s model was frequently used for identifying
the ISB study on user-oriented context, especially on students in the
academic environment such as in class and library setting (ID U-01, U-02,
U-03, and M-05).

TABLE 1. The list of theses used in this article
White argued that Ellis’s model can characterise most situation
involving information seeking (2016). In Figure 2, Ellis’s model
differentiates the various ISB patterns of scientists and engineers in their
surroundings (Ellis & Haugan, 1997). Ellis proposed a set of eight features
that form a framework for ISB,
1. Starting: activities such as the initial search for an overview of the
literature or locating key people working in the field,
2. Chaining: following footnotes and citations in known material or
“forward” chaining from known items through citation indexes or
proceeding in personal networks,
3. Browsing: variably directed and structured scanning of primary and
secondary sources,
4. Differentiating: using known differences in information sources as a
way of filtering the amount of information obtained,
5. Monitoring: regularly following developments in a field through
particular formal and informal channels and sources,
6. Extracting: selectively identifying relevant material in information
source,
7. Verifying: checking inaccuracy of information, and
