Kajian Dalam Bidang Ilmu Perpustakaan dan Informasi: Filosofi, Teori, dan Praktik
Nonetheless, there is still significant value in those models and
methods because there are aspects of information behaviour, such as the
uncertainty ingrained in seeking solutions (Kuhlthau, 1991; Chen, 2014),
that are associated with people and transcend technological advances
(White, 2016).
Aspects of these models and methods are therefore still relevant in
informing the design of ISB to support activities, including helping searchers
clarify vague information needs, learn from information present in the
collection, and investigate solutions to information problems (Marchionini
and White, 2009; Rahmi et al., 2018). The validation and application of
ISB models to large-scale behavioural data as well as the models under
which the data were collected remain an open question largely.
C. Limitation
At this point, the author can only offer anecdotal evidence regarding
ISB models and methods used both in undergraduate and master’s theses
in Universitas Indonesia’s thesis collection that cannot be generalised
the ISB studies in Indonesia. Moreover, White (2016) stated that the ISB
models are divided into four key areas such as 1) the act of exploring, 2)
seeking information, 3) gathering and organising information, and 4) using
information. The analysis showed that most of the thesis publications focus
on 2) seeking information models. There might be due to the low number of
ISB thesis publications. Inclusion and exclusion are judgement-calls in any
classification system, specifically where the definitions are still evolving,
but this flexibility may not apply equally to ISB thesis publications in
Universitas Indonesia’s Library (Greifeneder, 2014). Therefore, the larger
sample with the accessible access needed for further research.
It is also worth considering the understanding of theories of information
behaviour due to the models and methods used in the thesis is limited, so
further investigation is needed, as well as more quantitative studies are
required (Fisher, Erdelez & McKechnie, 2005).
IV. CONCLUSION
ISB continued to be a core topic of information behaviour interest
in information science research (Wilson, 2018). This article examined ten
information seeking behaviour (ISB) relevant publications in Universitas
Indonesia Library’s online thesis collection. The analysis showed that ISB
model from Ellis (1993) is the primary interest, followed by Kuhlthau
(1993), Leckie, Pettigrew & Sylvain (1996), McKenzie (2003), and Davis
(1989). Qualitative methods still dominated ISB research. The trend
appears in the ISB studies shows that the topics focusing on user-oriented
